Every week I want to tell you we misjudged something subtle. Most weeks, we misjudged something loud.
Start with the Dodgers. All of you were sure they'd hold the best record in baseball on August 10th. They'd just traded for a two-time Cy Young winner — of course they were the best team in the sport, right?
Except the Brewers had been sitting a game ahead of them the whole time, quietly winning unglamorous baseball games nobody was writing headlines about. The Dodgers then dropped that Arizona series too — their third series loss in a row, something they hadn't done in almost a year. A blockbuster trade is a press release. A won game is just a fact. We priced the press release.
Then there's Mateusz Gamrot, who tapped to a rear-naked choke in the first round Saturday night. Every one of you had him beating Quillan Salkilld. The betting markets didn't — Salkilld came in on a 12-fight win streak and was the actual favorite. We knew the name Gamrot. We didn't know who was winning. Name recognition is a hell of a drug, and it turns out it's also a lousy handicapper.
I want to be fair to the last one, because it isn't really a miss in the way the number suggests. Ariana Grande's "Petal" had her best sales week of the decade — 295,000 units, more than she's moved in years. We just asked whether it'd clear 300,000, and it landed five thousand short of a line we drew for no better reason than it was round. Clean numbers make for tidy questions and lousy forecasts. Reality doesn't know where we drew the line.
If there's a pattern here, it's that the loudest version of a story is rarely the most accurate one. The trade gets covered. The quiet win streak doesn't. I don't think that's cynicism — it's just how attention moves, the same way ants find the path with the most traffic and not necessarily the safest one. We'll try to notice the quiet path a little more this week.
New questions are already live. Go be wrong with me.
