Saudi Arabia's proposed multinational Maritime Defense Coalition, aimed at securing the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait and Gulf of Aden, remained well short of the 20-country threshold at its August 10, 2026 resolution deadline. The coalition was announced July 30, 2026, at a Riyadh meeting hosted by the Saudi Defense Ministry, attended by representatives from dozens of countries plus an EU delegation, but only 14 states formally signed on as members: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Turkiye and Yemen, alongside a later addition, Comoros. On August 6, the Saudi Ministry of Defense named Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri as commander of the coalition, tasking him with overseeing joint naval defense operations and coordinating with member states and other maritime security bodies. The ministry described the coalition as open to further accessions, and additional countries were reported to be completing domestic approval procedures, but no confirmed expansion beyond roughly 14 members was reported before the August 10 deadline. As a result, the market question, whether membership would exceed 20 countries by that date, resolved NO. Community sentiment ahead of resolution had been split evenly at 50 percent.
