Aryna Sabalenka's bid to reach the semifinals of the 2026 National Bank Open in Toronto ended in the round of 16, where the top-ranked Belarusian was upset by 16th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 on Saturday, August 8. The match lasted nearly two and a half hours. Serving to stay in the match at 4-5 in the deciding set, Sabalenka saved two match points before a double fault on the third gave Alexandrova the victory. Alexandrova said afterward she had no expectations entering the match and chose to play aggressively, saying it "caused many more mistakes but at the same time...created many more opportunities." Sabalenka's exit came the same day as a separate upset of Jessica Pegula, leaving Toronto's draw without two of its biggest favorites heading into the quarterfinals. Because the loss occurred in the round of 16, Sabalenka did not advance to the quarterfinals or semifinals of the tournament. The prediction market question, which had been evenly split at 50 percent among a small number of voters, resolved NO.
