AAA's national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline stood at $4.07 on Aug. 13, 2026, remaining above $4 rather than dropping below it, Yahoo Finance reported that day, describing it as the highest price ever recorded for the month of August. The average had briefly dipped to about $4.00 earlier in the week before climbing again amid tight fuel supplies. GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis said the national average had never before been above $4 a gallon this late in the calendar year, according to The Hill. Analysts attributed the elevated prices to constrained global crude supply tied to the ongoing US-Iran conflict and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, alongside US gasoline inventories sitting at multiyear lows despite softer demand; crude oil was trading in the $80-a-barrel range. The elevated pump prices capped a summer of record-setting costs, with the national average sitting at or above $4 for roughly 103 days so far in 2026, the most since 2022. The Predict Six community had put only a 21% chance on the average falling below $4 by Aug. 13, correctly anticipating that prices would stay elevated.
