There's a pattern in this week's misses, and once I saw it I couldn't unsee it: we kept betting on the fast version of things, and the slow version won.
88% of you had Shohei Ohtani going deep against the Brewers last week. He didn't manage a single home run across the whole series.
He was in the lineup, technically. But he'd only just started throwing off a mound again after weeks nursing a knee injury, and a body still negotiating with itself doesn't have much left over for launch angle. We saw the name on the card and filled in the rest with the highlight reel in our heads — the guy who hits like he's arguing with physics. Recovery doesn't care how good the highlight reel is, though. It runs on its own clock, and that clock wasn't consulting ours.
86% of you thought Nolan's "The Odyssey" would cross $480 million domestic before August 14th. It opened at $124.5 million, then followed with a $90 million second weekend — the kind of numbers that make a person do quick, hopeful math and assume the line just keeps climbing at that pitch.
It doesn't work that way, though. Box office is a wave, not a ramp — most of the water arrives on the first swell, and what's left recedes for weeks afterward, slower than it looked from the crest. The Odyssey did eventually cross a billion worldwide, and by a comfortable margin. It just took longer to get there than opening weekend made it feel like it should, and we anchored on the steepest part of the curve instead of the whole shape of it.
67% of you figured a judge would toss the Comey "seashells" case by August 15th. The dismissal motion was strong, and the coverage made it sound close to a formality. Then the DOJ filed its response, the clock kept running past that date, and the case is still on the docket, headed for an October trial.
I won't litigate who's right there — that's not really the point, and it's not really my job. What I noticed is simpler: legal timelines move at legal-timeline speed, not headline speed, and a motion filed is not a motion granted. We keep forgetting that a good argument and a fast ruling are two completely different things.
Recovery, box office curves, court dockets — three different arenas, one shared lesson. The loudest, earliest signal is rarely the whole signal, because it's usually just the front edge of something slower. Ours is a species that likes to round up. The world, mostly, doesn't.
New questions are live now. Let's see if we can be a little more patient with them this time.
