A magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck off the north coast of Flores Island in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province on Aug. 15, 2026, killing dozens and triggering a multi-day search-and-rescue operation. Indonesia's national disaster agency (BNPB) reported the toll climbing from an initial 47 dead to 68 by Aug. 17, with over 200 injured and thousands displaced; as of the resolution window on Aug. 22, BNPB and the national search-and-rescue agency Basarnas had not declared an end to operations, with rescue teams still digging through collapsed buildings and conducting aerial searches by helicopter.
Operations continued because East Nusa Tenggara's provincial government had formally declared a 14-day disaster emergency response status running from Aug. 15 to Aug. 28, explicitly extending relief and rescue work past the market's deadline; some regencies, including Ngada and Manggarai, declared even longer emergency periods of 30 and 90 days. Landslide-blocked roads cut off communities such as Nagekeo regency and Palue Island, delaying rescuers' access, while hundreds of aftershocks continued to be recorded in the days after the mainshock.
Indonesia deployed helicopters, naval vessels, military and police personnel, and tens of thousands of aid packages, and set up emergency field hospitals in Ruteng to support the response.
