Five players opened the 2026 BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club with 6-under-par 64s on Thursday, Aug. 20, each clearing the 64-or-better threshold in the tournament's opening round. Gary Woodland, Rory McIlroy, Wyndham Clark, J.J. Spaun and Chris Gotterup shared the first-round lead in St. Louis.
Bellerive played soft after rain, and calm conditions produced widespread low scoring across the field. Woodland's round featured a hole-out eagle on the par-4 11th, where his 97-yard approach carried the water fronting the green and spun back into the cup. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler, by contrast, bogeyed four times in a five-hole stretch from Nos. 3 through 7 and finished the day at 2 over.
The five co-leaders set the tone for a tightly bunched leaderboard through the FedEx Cup Playoffs event, in which only the top 30 players in points after the tournament advance to the season-ending Tour Championship. By the third round, Clark had separated himself from the field, building a six-shot lead over a tie for second between McIlroy and Gotterup.
