California's June 2 top-two gubernatorial primary confirmed a bipartisan general election matchup, with Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton advancing to November after results were finalized around June 9. With 88 percent of ballots tallied, Becerra led with approximately 28 percent of the vote, Hilton followed at roughly 25 percent, and billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer β who polls suggested might edge out Hilton for second place β finished at around 20 percent. Becerra, the former U.S. Attorney General under President Biden, consolidated Democratic support among mainstream voters, while Hilton, a former Fox News host backed by President Trump, consolidated the Republican vote in a heavily Democratic state. The result sets up an unusual D-vs.-R November matchup in California, which last elected a Republican governor when Arnold Schwarzenegger's term ended in 2011. The 69 percent of Predict Six participants who predicted a bipartisan top-two finish correctly anticipated the field dynamics and Steyer's inability to overtake Hilton.
