The two leaders did not hold a joint press conference at the conclusion of their bilateral meeting on September 24. Instead, each side issued separate, uncoordinated announcements. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said upon Xi's arrival that Washington and Beijing had agreed to extend their tariff truce through January 10, 2026, originally set to expire November 10. Xi's own statement, released through the Chinese embassy, made no mention of trade at all, saying instead that "China and the United States should be partners, not rivals." The split messaging reflected continued friction over trade, technology export controls, Taiwan and Iran even as both governments sought a cordial tone, including a White House state dinner attended by tech executives Elon Musk, Tim Cook and Sam Altman. The lack of a joint appearance departed from the precedent set when Presidents Obama and Xi took questions together during Xi's 2015 visit.
