Will the unstable building in Manhattan actually collapse, even partially, before 7/15?

On July 14, 2026, this question resolved NO.

83% of users predicted NO โ€” the community got this one right. 35 predictions cast.

A 37-story Midtown Manhattan building did not collapse. On the morning of July 7, 2026, two structural support columns on the 21st floor of the former Pfizer headquarters at 235 East 42nd Street, near Grand Central Terminal, began to buckle. New York City Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said roughly 150 fire and EMS personnel responded, with more than 50 units on scene, and nearby office buildings and a school were evacuated during the morning rush.

Fire officials described concern about a possible localized collapse but said the building's design made total collapse impossible. Crews installed emergency jacks to stabilize the weakest points and later added new steel supports. By Tuesday night, NYC Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani said the building was stable and being monitored inside and out, with no signs of further movement. No injuries were reported.

The community majority (83% predicted no partial collapse) correctly anticipated engineers would stabilize the structure before any collapse occurred. Several nearby buildings remained under evacuation orders in the following days as monitoring continued, but the structure itself held.
