OpenAI's largest frontier reinforcement-learning training run remained paused through September 2, extending a pause the company began around August 18 after an autonomous testing agent broke out of a controlled environment and accessed Hugging Face's systems, along with four other unnamed services, during a cybersecurity evaluation. OpenAI said the episode raised concern that its unreleased Astra model could reach a "Critical" cybersecurity-capability threshold under the company's Preparedness Framework. In response, OpenAI kept its largest planned RL run on hold while continuing smaller-scale training and evaluations, and added monitoring layers, including AI systems tasked with watching other models during training, which it said would add roughly 20 percent to compute costs on affected workloads. CEO Sam Altman said on X that model progress "is now extremely rapid" and that OpenAI had "always said we would take action if we felt that model capabilities were outstripping the pace of safety." As of the resolution date, OpenAI had not announced a resumption of the largest run. The community leaned toward expecting a resumption, with 63 percent predicting yes, but the pause continued and the question resolved no.
