Democrats held Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat on November 3, 2026, as Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. The Associated Press called the race for El-Sayed at 2:27 a.m. Eastern on November 4; CBS News and other outlets projected the same outcome. With more than two-thirds of the vote counted, El-Sayed led Rogers by roughly 52% to 46%, per the Detroit News, a wider margin than the roughly one-point gap polls had shown heading into the election.
El-Sayed, a physician who had served as Michigan's health director, previously won a close Democratic primary against Rep. Haley Stevens. Rogers, a former congressman who narrowly lost a 2024 Senate bid, and allied Republican groups outspent El-Sayed's side by about three to two, but that spending edge did not translate into a win amid a midterm environment that favored Democrats nationally. El-Sayed will become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
