The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline stood at roughly $4.09 as of AAA's July 23, 2026 report, up about 15 cents from the prior week but well short of the $4.20 threshold in question. Rising crude oil prices, linked to tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz and broader Middle East supply concerns, pushed pump prices higher across nearly every state during the week.
Most states were averaging $4 a gallon or above by late July, extending a run-up that had been building since Brent crude climbed into the mid-$80s per barrel earlier in the month. Even so, the week-over-week increase was gradual enough that the national average stayed contained below the $4.20 mark heading into Friday's close.
The community correctly predicted this one: just 28% of predictors expected prices to end the week above $4.20, and the large majority who bet against it were right. The result tracked a broader pattern this summer in which gas prices climbed steadily on oil-market jitters without producing the sharper spikes some had anticipated earlier in the month.
