With so much in the world feeling a bit shaky right now, will the US have a quake of 5.0+ b4 July 4?

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Mendocino County in Northern California on the morning of June 24, 2026, fulfilling the conditions of this question well before the July 4 deadline. The quake occurred at approximately 8:10 a.m. near Willits, at a shallow depth of roughly five miles, and shook areas more than 100 miles from the epicenter. More than one million residents across Northern California received ShakeAlert notifications. At least 12 aftershocks, all below magnitude 2.5, followed within the first hour; no significant structural damage or injuries were immediately reported.
Mendocino County sits within a seismically complex zone where the Pacific, North American, and Gorda tectonic plates converge, making the region one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the continental United States. Events at or above magnitude 5.0 occur there several times per year, though the timing and location of any individual quake cannot be predicted.
Despite the region's seismic history, the community strongly predicted no qualifying earthquake before July 4, with just 13 percent of participants answering yes โ one of the larger community misses in recent questions.
