Democrats won control of the U.S. Senate in the Nov. 3, 2026 midterm elections, flipping the net four seats they needed from Republicans' 53-47 majority, according to Al Jazeera and NBC News. Democratic candidates won previously Republican-held seats including Iowa (Josh Turek), Texas (James Talarico, the first Democratic Senate win there since 1988), Ohio (Sherrod Brown), Maine (Troy Jackson, unseating five-term incumbent Susan Collins), North Carolina (Roy Cooper) and Kansas, giving Democrats a majority of at least 54 seats with a handful of races still being finalized.

The flips were driven by stronger-than-expected Democratic performance across traditionally Republican-leaning states, following a midterm cycle widely read as a referendum on the Trump administration roughly two years into his second term. Several races that had been rated as tossups or lean-Republican, including Kansas and Ohio, broke for Democrats, while contests in states like Iowa and North Carolina that had drawn heavy national spending also went their way.

The outcome fits a broader historical pattern in which the party controlling the White House tends to lose ground in midterm elections, and came alongside Democratic gains in the House and several governorships on the same night.

The Predict Six community got this one right: 64% of forecasters correctly expected Democrats to take the Senate.
