Rep. Thomas Massie, who had represented Kentucky's 4th Congressional District since 2012, lost the May 19, 2026 Republican primary to Trump-endorsed challenger Ed Gallrein, a farmer and former Navy SEAL, by roughly 55 to 45 percent, in what became the most expensive U.S. House primary in history, with more than $32 million spent. President Trump had targeted Massie for opposing his agenda, including votes against Israel-related aid measures and objections to U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict, and for pushing to force release of Justice Department files on Jeffrey Epstein. Massie conceded on primary night, joking the race "went on longer than Vietnam," and said he stood by his positions.

That night, Massie told reporters that Kentucky's 1920 "sore loser" law barred him from running as an independent for his own House seat, calling that restriction "probably a good thing." The law did not technically prevent an independent bid for Kentucky's open Senate seat, being vacated by Mitch McConnell, ahead of the June 2, 2026 filing deadline, but Massie repeatedly denied any such plans and instead filed FEC paperwork for a 2028 House run over Memorial Day weekend.

No independent Senate campaign was ever announced. The community's 39 percent Yes vote correctly anticipated this outcome.
