Senate Republican leader emeritus Mitch McConnell, 84, announced Monday, July 27, 2026, that he would extend his leave from the Senate through the rest of the week, including skipping Fancy Farm, the Kentucky political picnic he had attended for more than four decades. McConnell has been absent from the Capitol since a fall at his home on June 14 and has been recovering at a rehabilitation facility.

The Capitol's attending physician said McConnell had not yet been medically cleared to return to work. In a statement from his office, McConnell said he was "still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders." His prolonged absence has slowed some Senate committee business and votes.

The question asked whether McConnell would return to the Capitol, even briefly, before the end of July. He did not: his July 27 announcement effectively ruled out a return during the final days of the month.

The community leaned toward "no," with only 27% predicting a return, correctly anticipating that his recovery would keep him away through the end of July.
